Design

  • Obverse: Left-facing Arethusa surrounded by swimming dolphins
  • Reverse: A charioteer driving a quadriga (four-horse chariot), with Nike, the goddess of victory, above

Arethusa: A beautiful nymph in Greek mythology who served Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. She was loved by Alpheus, the river god, but rejected his advances and sought Artemis’s protection.
To save her, Artemis transformed Arethusa into a sacred spring, but Alpheus flowed underground to reunite with her on the island of Ortygia in Sicily. This legendary story led to the creation of the Arethusa Fountain in Syracuse, symbolizing eternal love.

Nike: The Greek goddess of victory, known in Roman mythology as Victoria.
Her name is pronounced Nike in English, and the famous sports brand "Nike" is named after this goddess.
